Canton du Valais Description
Valais (or Wallis in English) is the third largest canton of Switzerland, situated in the South-Western Alps. It is both the oldest and largest wine producing region of the Swiss nation; vineyards in the upper Alpine area of Visperterminen the highest in Europe, over 1,100 metres above sea-level. Switzerland's Valais vineyards account for over 40% of the country's wine exports, notably Germanier, Gillard and Bonvin. These distilleries occupy the fertile lands on the right bank of the Rhone, between the picturesque towns of Martigny and Leuk. Wine tours of the region also take in the towns of Ardon, Muraz and Sierre, renowned for their quality exports. Traditional cottages within Leuk are among the most popular holiday rentals in Valais, for wine-loving visitors.
Just 13km (8 miles) North of Sierre lies the picturesque mountain resort of Grimentz, one of the oldest unspoiled villages in the Val d'Anniviers. Quieter than the popular resorts at St. Moriz and Zerbatt, Grimentz offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding peaks with the serenity one doesn't get with most Alpine resorts. Although less frequented, Grimentz offers pistes that are easily on a par with her more affluent Alpine competitors.
With over 50km of Black, Red and Blue ski-runs, along with 12 lifts and eight new snow guns recently implemented at St Luc-Chandolin, Grimentz appeals to everyone, from amateur to expert. Wooden chalet rentals are by far the most popular variants of accommodation on offer, however you'll also find wooden duplex apartments upon the slopes at nearby Zinal, offering some of the best panoramic views of all holiday properties in Switzerland.
