Jamaica Description
Jamaica - the “gem” of the Northern Caribbean, is the most popular of the tri-islands forming the Greater Antilles archipelago, 145km South of the Cuban coast. Occupying a mass of over 11,200km² (4,300 square miles), Jamaica is often known as the “Land of Wood and Water” due to contrasting, bountiful landscapes which yield rich harvests of exotic fruits, sugar-cane, and timbers, along with sweet spring water from the mountainous regions.
Tropical climes add to the allure of Jamaica as a sun-seekers paradise. Temperatures from March-September maintain consistent highs of 85-90F, while October to December is regarded as “green” or “rainy” season. Despite this categorization, Jamaica enjoys relative high temperatures during it's “winter” months, with only intermittent showers and sporadic cloudy spells.
The Commonwealth Realm of Jamaica is divided into three administrative regions – Surrey, Middlesex and Cornwall, yet also categorized by her fourteen parishes, ranging greatly in size. Kingston – the capital of Jamaica lies on the flourishing South coast, overlooking the bustling harbour of Port Royal, and is served by one of two international airports on the island – Norman Manley International Airport. The other, Sangster International Airport is located at Montego Bay.
Holiday properties in Jamaica are distinctly varied from coast to coast. Clustered around the promenades of Kingston, one will find a number of modern apartment complexes with neat balconies and secluded pools, all facing the deep blue of the Caribbean. In contrast, the “Seven Mile Beach” at Negril, on the Western tip of the island offers a choice of the more traditional cottage and villa holiday rentals in Jamaica.
If you're seeking a more affluent holiday residence, look no further than “Mo' Bay” (Montego Bay). This buzzing hub in the North-West has long been a party capital, and playground of millionaires who shore up their yachts, then head in-land to savour the delights of restaurants, such as the Sea Horse Grill at Montego Bay Yacht Club. For a night to remember, head to nearby Gloucester Avenue where some of the hippest clubs and shows provide entertainment lasting well into the early hours.
Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, in length and as much as in width, and amounts to 10,990 square kilometres (4,243 sq mi). It is situated in the Caribbean Sea, about south of Cuba, and west of Hispaniola, the island harbouring the nation-states Haiti and the Dominican Republic (...)
