Bulgaria Description

Bulgaria Image

Swathed by miles of gold frontier beaches, course snow-tipped Balkan mountains and the remains of ancient border-lines; Bulgaria represents a country with a multi-faceted personality. Until 1998, Bulgaria's regional make-up consisted of eight individual “oblasts”: Sofia City, Plovdiv, Haskovo, Sofia Region, Burgas, Varna, Rousse and Lovech. The country reformed to it's provincial make-up of 28 districts (ukrugs) following public pressure.

Founded in 7th Century B.C, the Bulgarian capital of Sofia lies within the Sofia Valley, between the Balkan and Vitosha Mountains. Enjoying relatively humid temperatures of 78-82F in the summer, Sofia's temperatures can plummet to 27-34F during winter months-perfect for the boutique ski resorts cropping up in the Balkan region. Such temperature variation has influenced the types of holiday properties in Bulgaria. Sofia's options range from mountainside retreats in the Balkans, to purpose built, modern city apartments. The trendiest apartment holiday rentals in Bulgaria can be found in the district of Vitosha, not far from Vitosha Boulevard – ranked the 22nd most exclusive street in the world! Doorstep attractions include the 17th Century, golden-domed Alexander Nevetsky Cathedral, Bulgarian National History Museum and the beautiful neo-Byzantine St. Sofia Church.

Sofia's sister city-Veliki Preslav, (in the former North Eastern Varna region) is considered the historical heartland of Bulgaria. The remnants of czarist rule can be found throughout the second capital, with a history dating back to the 5th Century. Situated on the banks of the Ticha River, Veliki Preslav is a hot-spot for culture-seekers, with some of the cheapest holiday property rentals in Bulgaria.

Just 45 miles South of Sofia lies the notorious ski resort of Borovets and Bulgaria's highest peak, Mount Musala (2925m). The oldest of Bulgaria's ski resorts, Borovets comprises over fifteen lifts and twenty runs, also making it the largest resort of its kind. The small resort is a cluster of hotels, restaurants and bars, interspersed with self-catering log cabins and two storey apartment blocks. Adjacent to the Markudjik resort, transport is fairly basic, in the form of traditional buses operating on a four-hourly basis to the nearby town of Samokov.

Bulgaria , officially the Republic of Bulgaria (transliterated: Republika Balgariya), is a country in Southeast Europe. Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south (...)
